Casual outdoor spring family photo session

For ten months, I lived in Wichita, Kansas. It was a town that reminded me of my hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. My biggest challenge during those ten months was moving my photography services to a new market where I had zero connections and had to completely start from scratch.

When I launched into photography in Omaha, I had at least a baseline to start with - especially when it came to weddings because I had already been working in the Omaha wedding industry for four years and had had plenty of time to do my research, get to know and work with a lot of the vendors in town.

That becomes a totally different ball game when you move to a new city.

Luckily, this taught me a good lesson before we moved to St. Petersburg, Florida (where I currently live) and managing that transition was not as overwhelming and I had a lot more confidence in what I was doing. Plus, I had done so much already that my work was beginning to speak for itself.

Anyway, this was one family that hired me while I was in Wichita. Their session started out pretty formal, because that’s what many folks are used to. However, my favorite parts of photographing a family comes afterward, when the “posing” parts are done and there are these fun in-between moments that I love capturing.

Bottom line, let your kids be kids!
